Why should you be chosen?

When a high-profile role, a promotion or an exciting opportunity is up for grabs, why should you be chosen over everyone else who is competing?

What is it that places you ahead of others? Did you ever consider creating a ‘Personal Differentiation Strategy’ for yourself?

I am a strong advocate of Active Career Management, where you take charge of your own career trajectory, instead of leaving it to chance.

Creating a ‘Personal Differentiation Strategy’ is a key element of active career management.

There are 6 elements to a Personal Differentiation Strategy:

1) Expertise — What kind of skills and expertise do you carry? Which of these skills are unique and make you a better fit for the role you are aspiring for? Do you have proven credibility in the niche in terms of certifications/thought-leadership, etc?

2) Distinctive strengths — A distinctive strength is something you do well, that others don’t. Identify your distinctive strengths and relate it to the job at hand. What core competitive advantage do you bring to the table with reference to the role?

3) Exposure — What kind of experience and exposure do you bring to the table? How does this exposure qualify you to do the new role better? If the new role requires working with international stakeholders, prior experience in running such projects would be a huge advantage.

4) Achievements — If you have a track record of having done a successful job with a similar role/project, that becomes a distinct advantage. Play up your achievements and highlight key wins that are relevant.

5) Relationships — Here is where your network comes into play. If you have strong relationships that enable you to navigate the new role/project easily, it becomes an advantage. For instance, if the new role requires expansion to a new geography where you have a strong network, it gives you an edge.

6) Personal Brand — A strong personal brand ensures that you get noticed and approached for opportunities that you may even be aware of. When you have a strong brand and credibility in the domain, you may get considered for the role before you even pitch yourself for the role.
