There is a fascinating thread that runs across the life stories of successful icons –

They did not wake up to success one fine day. They had to work for it over long periods of time.

They took risks, faced challenges head on, they failed, they endured discomfort, pain and eventually emerged stronger.

As they pursued their goals, they had to step out of their comfort zones, wade through ambiguity, acquire new skills and build mental strength and fortitude.

They literally grew as people, so professional growth and success followed.

Success is not just about reaching the summit. It is also about how you grow along the journey and who you become through the pursuit.

Success requires you to get a handle on several things. Here are 8 important ones:

1) Handling Rejection: Take the sting out of rejection by treating is as redirection

2) Handling Fear: Take the first step despite the fear and the subsequent steps get easier

3) Handling Failure: Failure is not final — treat is as a temporary detour on the way to success

4) Handling Uncertainty: View uncertainty as a promise of exciting things to come

5) Handling Insecurity: Understand that it is okay to not have all the answers. Trust yourself to figure things out

6) Handling Obstacles: Take obstacles in your stride. They make your journey story-worthy!

7) Handling Criticism — History is abound with stories of geniuses who were criticized for their ideas. Maybe you are on the way to creating history too!

And finally…

8) Handling Success — Inability to handle success can cause a downfall. Learn to handle success with humility, integrity, and grace.

Let me sign off with a quote by Arthur Ashe — “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.
