When was the last time you took a moment for yourself?

Most of us tend to lead super-charged lives that are incredibly hectic. And if we do manage to find some peace amidst our numerous tasks, we have no dearth of distraction from the media onslaught. So how do we find “Me time” and is it really necessary? Here is what I think…

Why do we need “Me time”?

The pace of our lives has a huge impact on us not only physically, but also mentally. And like the lack of rest leaves us with physical tiredness, the lack of “Me time” tends to drain us mentally. Many people have now recognized the importance of exercise, healthy eating and rest, towards maintaining one’s physical health. However, very few people address mental exhaustion. This could eventually lead to burn out, lower productivity and could also have an impact on your creativity and performance. Hence, it is absolutely essential to find time for yourself.

Another critical facet of “Me time” is that it is therapeutic. Time spent in solitude, tends to refresh and rejuvenate you. It enables you to evaluate your priorities and gain clarity on your objectives.

How do we find “Me time”?

Well, you don’t find “Me time”, but you make it happen! It need not be a long stretch of time. Even 15–20 minutes may be enough. Once a day or even a few times a week should do the trick. And then a longer vacation once or twice a year will seal the deal on effective “Me time”.

Make a habit of dedicating some part of your day to yourself. And use this time to indulge in something you enjoy doing. Here are a few ideas:

Take a walk in natural surroundings and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature

Immerse yourself in a good book that can transport you to a different time and location

Make time for exercise and it will leave you refreshed, despite all the effort you put in

Sip a cup of tea or coffee while allowing your mind to wander and relax

Catch up with a friend and make happy memories

Indulge in a spa treatment and feel your stress melt away

Meditate on a regular basis and experience the magic of silence

Pursue your favourite hobby and experience the satisfaction that comes from doing something you love

Travel to a new place and experience a new culture

There are so many things you could do and each one of us has our favourites. I for one, love to read and could lose myself in a book with no track of time. I make time to read and exercise every day and it helps me de-stress. When I am faced with a challenging situation, I take a walk and it helps clear my thoughts. And even on the most hectic and stressful of days, I can find a few minutes of peace with a cup of tea!

Go ahead and make time for yourself….you deserve it!

As a wise person once said…

Sometimes you just need to disconnect and enjoy your own company”.
